Spring is Just Around the Corner: An Update from the Vineyard.
It may not look like it or feel like it outside, however Spring is just around the corner. Our plans this year are to prune the 500 Prairie Star and possibly a few rows of the Marquette. We will also plant 25-50 more Dwarf Honey crisp Apple trees. If all goes well, this Fall we will plan to have a Prairie Star harvest of around 3,000 – 4,000 lbs.
As far as dates go, we plan to prune the Prairie Star vines the weekends of March 11, 18, and 25. We hope you can join us for one of those Saturdays. We will be starting at 9 A.M., you are welcome to join us at that time or later if you choose. We will catch some lunch about 1, while then finishing up about 6 or so. We plan to then do a dinner, either go out or we will cook up something fun.
Pruning is the first step to balanced vine which produces a healthy productive crop, so those who have not done this yet will be working with us closely to make sure it is done right. It’s a lot of work, but very rewarding to know that those vines have been set up by you for a successful year. You will then be able to pick them in the Fall and see what good pruning can do. Now you’re excited !
As we did last Spring we will be making a major contribution for each volunteer, so that you will know your travel down to Pepin and work in the vineyard has resulted in real tangible improvement in the lives of our Minneapolis, Minnesota, and International neighbors thru our 3 outstanding charities. In this way our vineyard (and future apple orchard ) will continue to help us make our beautiful world an even better place. We know that when our efforts help others live better, then our lives improve and become richer, as we are all ultimately connected. This year particularly a little more Compassion and Love would not hurt!
So, if you think that might work, give me a call and I’ll fill you in with additional information.
